Opportunity Conference 2008
The sixth annual Opportunity Conference was held on October 22, 2008 in Orlando, FL. Drawing over 500 registrants and 40 speakers, and workshop leaders, this event highlighted the achievements and bright future of Asian Pacific, Hispanic, and African Americans, ensuring that all Americans have access to the full array of employment opportunities. Workshops and speakers addressed an array of subjects designed to promote regional economic development initiatives, marketing, accessing Federal resources and understanding procurement procedures; all in an effort to promote greater prosperity in the nation's underserved communities, which are vital catalysts for economic development, leadership, and creation of new jobs.

New Freedom Initiative (NFI) Awards 2008
Established in 2002, the Secretary of Labor's New Freedom Initiative Award annually recognizes non-profits, small businesses, corporations and individuals that have demonstrated exemplary and innovative efforts in furthering the employment and workplace environment for people with disabilities, one of the goals of President Bush's New Freedom Initiative. On October 8, 2008, the Seventh Annual NFI Awards were presented to eight recipients.

Asian Pacific American (APA) Federal Career Advancement Summit 2008
The seventh annual Asian Pacific American (APA) Federal Career Advancement Summit was held on May 15, in partnership with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Building on the successes of the past 6 years, the 2008 Summit welcomed a record number of more than 1,200 participants, who attended the training workshops, executive coaching, plenary session, video training series and workplace exhibits. The Asian Pacific American Summit seeks to increase diversity in senior positions of the federal workforce.

Transforming the American Workplace: A 21st Century Vision 2008
The U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) hosted the Transforming the American Workplace: A 21st Century Vision Summit on June 3 & 4. Through a series of speakers and workshops, participants learned that hiring people with disabilities is a smart way for businesses to capitalize on the value people with disabilities bring to the workplace.
