The DATM Application (Digital Amtrak Train Model) was created for the Federal Railroad Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation. It is a stand-alone mapping application designed using ESRI's MapObjects and Visual Basic. It allows the user to view the running of Amtrak trains on a map according to the trains' daily schedule. The user is able to select the time frame in which the trains will run, the individual trains to be run, and manipulate the map extent to view one section of the country, or the whole country. An additional feature allows the user to alter the arrival and departure times of an individual train's schedule, and run the train to see the effect of the changes on the rail system.

In 2003 the Volpe Center is migrating DATM to the ArcGIS platform. It will be implemented as an extension with additional functionality including analysis of origin-destination data, and the ability to create new Amtrak routes.
