AFSD-LE Ryan Recognized for Valor

News & Happenings

June 5, 2007

Mike Ryan, assistant federal security director - law enforcement at Boston's Logan International Airport, was recently awarded the highest honor for heroism given by the historic Humane Society of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts after helping save the lives of two people.

First on the scene of a two-car fatal accident, Ryan contacted emergency responders and, using his car, closed the roadway to facilitate rescue efforts until emergency responders arrived.

Before that happened, one of the burning cars had a secondary explosion as Ryan tried to extract a badly injured victim. And due to poor visibility and debris covering three highway lanes, Ryan was almost struck by a passing vehicle as he attempted to render aid.

"I simply did what I could to help given this horrific situation," he said. "Sadly, the outcome was fatal for one passenger."

The Humane Society honors those who risk their lives to save others.
