Environmental
Education
at the Texas Mid-Coast Refuges
We're excited that you want to use the refuges to enhance
your classroom learning experience. We have an active environmental education
program which you can adjust to fit the needs of students from elementary
through high school. We'll be happy to work with you in making plans for
your time at the refuges.
Your
trip should result in big grins, dirty hands, happy memories, and a new
and better understanding of the Texas Mid-Coast Refuges and their inhabitants.
Activities
At the Texas Mid-Coast Refuges you can have the opportunity
to work with your students on a variety of activities including catching
and identifying water insects, making casts of animal tracks, seeing some
of the native reptiles "up close and personal", learning how
to handle fishing rods and reels, seining, learning fish anatomy, and
observing the wildlife and plants with which we share this part of the
world.
Scheduling Trips
Schools and other groups must make a reservation for a
field trip, generally at least three weeks in advance although sometimes
dates are scheduled several months in advance. To make a reservation call
(979) 849-6062.
Visits may range from
a few hours to an entire school day. Staff assistance is available to
help with planning. Groups are expected to abide by the refuge's rules
and regulations, and we recommend having at least one adult for every
ten students. Students should always be accompanied by an adult.
When you contact us,
we will send you additional information which we're sure you will find
helpful.
Volunteering
We often use volunteers to help with environmental education
field investigations. You don't need prior knowledge of the subject -
we will train you! Its fun!
If you are available on at least some of the school days during the year
and would like to help with this program, we would like to hear from you.
