Employment Situation

Nonfarm payroll employment continued to decline in April (-539,000), and the unemployment rate rose from 8.5 to 8.9 percent. Since the recession began in December 2007, 5.7 million jobs have been lost. In April, job losses were large and widespread across most private-sector industries. Productivity and Costs

Productivity rose 0.8 percent in the nonfarm business sector in first-quarter 2009, as hours fell faster than output. Unit labor costs increased 3.3 percent. Productivity—as measured by output per hour of all persons—increased 0.8 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the first quarter of 2009, as output declined 8.2 percent and hours of all persons dropped 9.0 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). Full Text »
