The IHS Injury Prevention Program focus is on decreasing the incidence of severe injuries and death as a result of injuries in the American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Primary emphasis is directed to the greatest cause--motor vehicle crashes, and to the most common risk factors--lack of use of safety restraints, abuse of alcohol, and poor road conditions in rural areas. Other projects are focusing on preventing injuries to the elderly as a result of falling, the prevention of burn and fire injuries that occur in the home, the use of motorcycle and bicycle helmets to reduce traumatic brain injury, and other injury prevention.
