DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE WINS FOURTEEN WHITE HOUSE ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS

In a White House ceremony today the DoD won over half of the prestigious 1997 White House Closing the Circle Awards. The Closing the Circle Award recognizes individuals and groups within federal agencies who have demonstrated leadership in pollution prevention and waste reduction in accordance with President Clinton's program requiring federal agencies to adopt recycling programs and to purchase environmentally friendly products.

At the awards ceremony, Sherri W. Goodman, deputy under secretary of Defense (Environmental Security) congratulated the winners for their innovation in support of environmental protection and the military mission. She said, Your leadership exemplifies the Department's commitment to environmental excellence.

Closing the Circle Award categories include waste prevention, recycling, affirmative procurement, environmental innovation, model facility demonstrations, sowing the seeds for change and a separate category for individual performance.
