Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area
Public Transportation

This may not seem like a park for the car-less, but in fact you can spend a day or more out of the city, see the Water Gap from several viewpoints, hike along the Appalachian Trail, and take a canoe trip, all without having to get here by car.

Buses run to the south end of the park at Delaware Water Gap PA. With planning, the car-less who are capable of walking from 2 to 5 miles can bus to the Gap and:

ϑ tour the historic resort village of Delaware Water Gap PA on foot. The village has shops, eateries, antiques, a nearby lake and hiking trail, and a local history museum (summer)
ϑ tour the area of the Gap and Shawnee-on-Delaware PA by excursion trolley (summer)
ϑ hike around a small lake or to the top of the Gap on Mt. Minsi PA, or hike a section of the Appalachian Trail (backpacking also possible) Please link to the park bulletins at right (pdf files)
ϑ fish (license required), or just watch the river at Kittatinny Point NJ
ϑ rent a canoe (transportation upstream provided) and paddle back down to the Gap
ϑ  attend the Delaware Water Gap Jazz Festival and Celebration of the Arts (COTA) held in town at the end of the summer

Please use the links on this page and the information the pages for transportation To the Park and Within the Park pages to plan your visit.

(Only limited bus and commuter train service reaches the Port Jervis NJ and Milford PA area at the north end of the park. From there only taxi or rental car service will reach the park.)

Did You Know?
... that a century before this recreation area was formed, the Delaware Water Gap was touted as a Wonder of the World, and drew vacationers via rail lines from Philadelphia and New York City. There were trails to stroll, verandas for viewing the gap, and a steamboat for moonlight cruises.
