Shelter Program
The shelter can house up to 17 adults and children and usually operates at maximum capacity. Shelter staff collaborate with our Community-Based Services advocates to provide a coordinated response for clients. This team provides assistance and referrals, enabling clients to rebuild their lives. Staff lead domestic violence support groups, parenting groups, house meetings, and other groups that focus on such topics as life skills. Additionally, staff meet with clients individually. Three computers with Internet access are designated for clients’ use; volunteers provide computer tutoring, as requested. We also offer tutoring on English speaking, as well as childcare and healthcare services. Shelter residents receive food and other essentials.
Additionally, a key objective—one that makes a marked difference to shelter residents—is to normalize and heal their lives through recreational activities. We take clients to museums, the bowling alley, and the Boston Common for picnics. We have had hairdressers give residents haircuts, we have had spa nights, we have played bingo with prizes, and we have birthday parties and holiday celebrations. A community is formed among residents, and survivors can feel a sense of connection and empowerment.
