Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems provide a higher quality of service than traditional bus lines at a lower cost than rail systems. Through innovations in running ways, fare collection, signal priority and vehicle design, transit service is improved while maintaining the basic infrastructure of traditional bus systems. BRT projects can also include Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), branding and marketing strategies and land use benefits. The FTA supports BRT through demonstration, evaluation and informative programs.
The Overview includes a reference guide and description of BRT systems, technical information, and issues
The Projects section describes the current BRT systems in the United States and includes case studies
Reports and Publications contains several BRT evaluation reports for US systems and other information, including The Characteristics of Bus Rapid Transit, which describes in detail the components common to most BRT systems
Videos and Media includes brochures and other handouts along with BRT video clips
Through the External Links section you can reach cities employing or developing BRT systems, industry associations involved in BRT and other sources of information
