The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 6 covers the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Within Region 6, over 21 percent of the population is children under the age of 14. Children may be more vulnerable to environmental exposures than adults because:
- Their bodily systems are still developing
- They eat more, drink more, and breathe more in proportion to their body size
- Their behavior can expose them more to chemicals and organisms
Protecting children's health from environmental risks is fundamental to EPA's mission. Information about EPA’s efforts to protect children from environmental risk can be found on the following topic web sites:
The Southwest Center for Pediatric Environmental Health at the University of Texas Health Center in Tyler is a partner in children's health in Region 6. The have been recognized by EPA for their excellence in children's environmental health. Please visit their web site at http://www.swcpeh.org/. They join a list of other partners including Federal, State, Tribal, and non-profit organizations.
As part of their mission to improve children's environmental health, Dr. Larry Lowry of the Pediatric Environmental Health Speciality Unit teaches children about environmental poisons at Safari Day at the El Paso Zoo.
Several toys and other children's products have been recalled recently due to the risks they pose for children's health. For a complete list of these items, visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission's web site.
Partnerships for Children's Health
Informal education is a growing trend. There are hundreds of institutions such as health and science museums, children's museums, nature centers and other informal learning organizations providing information to millions of families across the nation. These institutions play a vital role in children's health within our communities by promoting healthy lifestyles, injury prevention and raising awareness about disease. They also promote creative thinking, environmental sustainability, and scientific inquiry. By partnering with these informal learning centers, EPA can deliver messages about children's environmental health and reach our audience more effectively through venues such as family event days, exhibits, web activities, and teacher workshops.
