Training on Management of Childhood Illnesses Expanded

At the Ministry of Health’s request, in September USAID’s ZdravPlus Project began providing Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) training to rural doctors and felchers (registered nurses) from all districts across the country.

Until recently, the IMCI was piloted by the USAID project in ten districts, two in each of the five provinces of Turkmenistan. The World Health Organization-recommended approach enables doctors to diagnose childhood illnesses locally without sophisticated equipment, and therefore is especially well-suited for rural areas which lack sufficient diagnostic facilities. The method is focused on preventive measures and treatment of the first symptoms of disease.

The USAID-funded ZdravPlus and Healthy Family Projects have been working with the Ministry of Health since 2002 to implement the IMCI strategy on several levels, including trainings for doctors and nurses, introduction of IMCI into the medical education system, and informing parents through community outreach activities.
