Fillmore's Wild Horses
Wild horses are one of the mountain west’s most fascinating animals. Warm Springs Resource Area is home to nearly 170 of these horses, which roam freely on the 330,000 acres that comprise three herd management areas: Conger Mountain, King Top and Sulphur. A small portion of the Frisco HMA is near the southern border of WSRA, but the herd is managed by the Cedar City BLM. The horses have an average weight of 700-1000 pounds and vary in color, ranging from grays, roans and pintos to bays and sorrels. The horses from the Sulphur Herd Management Area (HMA) are descendents of the Spanish Barb horses brought to the Americas by Spanish explorers in the 1600s. Dun, buckskin and grulla are generally the dominant colors found in this herd and feature traits such as the dorsal stripe, leg barring and bi-colored mane. The HMA has strived to preserve these colors and traits. Because of excess population within the wild horse herds, a number of horses are removed each year and Utah BLM provides an annual opportunity for horse enthusiasts to adopt these animals through the Adopt-A-Horse or Burro program. The program encourages qualified applicants to adopt and provide good homes for selected animals.
