HONORED BY NATIONAL ASSOCIATION
Deputy Federal Highway Administrator Gloria Jeff has been selected as one of the National Technical Association’s (NTA) 1998 Top Women in the Sciences and Technology.
Ms. Jeff is one of 50 outstanding women in the areas of science and technology selected by the NTA. She shares the honor with other notable women such as former Energy Secretary Hazel O’Leary; Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, who chairs the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission; and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas.
As deputy administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Ms. Jeff helps lead an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation that has 3,550 employees, a field office in every state, and an annual budget of more than $25 billion.
"Gloria’s selection is a tribute to her professional expertise and accomplishments, and it also reflects the top caliber of transportation professionals that President Clinton has brought to his administration," FHWA Administrator Kenneth R. Wykle said. "Her leadership and her dedication have been valuable assets as we build the transportation systems for the 21st century."
Ms. Jeff previously served as FHWA associate administrator for policy, where she oversaw the development of the agency’s strategic plan.
Ms. Jeff has been vice chairman of the intermodal issues committee of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). She is a member of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), the Statewide Multi-Modal Transportation Planning Committee, and TRB panels on ISTEA implementation, transportation marketing, and congestion management. She also is a member of the American Planning Association and the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
Ms. Jeff, who is from Detroit, has a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Michigan, where she also earned master’s degrees in civil engineering and in urban planning. She was honored in 1991 as a recipient of the university’s Distinguished Alumni Award. She received the AASHTO President’s Award for Intermodal Transportation in 1993.
The NTA was formed more than 70 years ago to provide opportunities for the exchange of information and ideas among minorities in technical fields and to help increase minority participation in architectural and engineering activity in America.
