Asian Pacific Heritage Month: Tu Dang

Tu Dang is a Foreign Affairs Officer in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. She is responsible for international labor and corporate social responsibility issues primarily for continental Africa in the Office of International Labor and Corporate Social Responsibility. She engages with foreign governments, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and others to advance labor rights and promote socially responsible business practices. Since joining the Department in 2006, Ms. Dang has demonstrated leadership, creativity and individual initiative in advancing U.S. foreign policy, particularly as it relates to promoting worker rights and combating exploitative labor practices, including child labor, worldwide.

Prior to joining the Department, Ms. Dang served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, providing project management and technical assistance to the government and non-governmental organizations on health, information technology, and business development.

Ms. Dang was born in Vietnam and arrived in the U.S. with her mother as a refugee. She grew up in San Rafael, California and was actively involved in student government and youth-related public policy issues. Outside of the Department, she continues to advocate for youth in her role as a member of the National Board of Directors for Summer Search, an organization dedicated to promoting youth leadership.

Ms. Dang earned degrees in International Affairs from George Washington University and Columbia University. She also holds a Professional Certificate in International Business Management from Georgetown University. Ms. Dang has received several awards for exemplary service with the Department and was nominated for and selected as a Hometown Diplomat.
