Green Building Challenge 2005

GSA’s Alfred A. Arraj U.S. Courthouse in Denver was highlighted at the 2005 World Sustainable Building Conference in Tokyo, Japan, September 27-29, 2005.  The courthouse, completed in 2002, was the only submission of the 2005 U.S. Team for the Green Building Challenge, an international effort to evaluate and improve the performance of buildings worldwide.

Results from the Green Building Assessment Tool and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) green building rating system, were presented at the conference as well as posters and brochures in an exhibit booth highlighting the courthouse, GSA, and the U.S. Green Building Council, developer of the LEED® rating system.

The Green Building Challenge, started in 1996, is a collaborative effort among participating countries to develop approaches for measuring the environmental performance of buildings taking into account the importance of regional factors related to climatic, resource, economic and even cultural conditions.  The Green Building Challenge is developing an internationally accepted generic framework that can compare existing green building assessment methods, facilitate comparisons of environmental performance of buildings and expand the scope beyond buildings to include environmental sustainability issues.
