Newark/New Jersey Airports Key to Air Cargo 'Strike'

News & Happenings

October 3, 2007

As part of TSA’s efforts to strengthen air cargo security, 57 transportation security inspectors (TSIs) from around the country joined forces with their New Jersey- and New York-based counterparts recently to conduct an air cargo "strike" at Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy International airports.

During air cargo strikes, TSIs saturate a geographic area, conducting focused inspections of regulated parties’ areas such as cargo facilities, ramps and warehouses. The goal is to maximize the number of thorough inspections. The teams of TSIs can also assist in doing necessary follow-up inspections. During a two-week period, these TSIs inspected almost 1,000 indirect air carriers and airlines.

TSA conducts, at a minimum, one air cargo strike a month at the nation’s largest airports on a random and unpredictable basis.
