Volpe National Transportation Systems Center

Andrew John Kendra, CFI

Mr. Andrew Kendra is a computer specialist for the Human Factors Divisions Cockpit Human Factors Research Laboratory. He mans the laboratory, develops software and hardware for experiments, and conducts experiments.

He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute and has worked in a research environment since 1987. As a programmer and instrumentation engineer, he programmed radiosonde telemetry systems, and conducted electric field radiosonde experiments. Mr. Kendra has published papers on electric field instrumentation and lighting protection. He designed, manufactured, and installed solid state electric field instruments for the Kennedy Space Center. He instrumented aircraft for electric field and anti-collision experiments, flew missions, and collected data. In 1992, Mr. Kendra earned his flight instructor certificate and started a fixed wing flight instruction department at an established helicopter flight school. In 1994, he earned his instrument instructor certificate.

In 1997, he joined the Volpe Center to participate in the Volpe-MIT Vertical Navigation Display study. Here his responsibilities included writing the display programs and conducting the experiment for 16 pilot test subjects. His current effort is to investigate means to provide line pilots with an accurate, realistic and demanding radio (air traffic control (ATC) and company) environment during full mission simulator flight scenarios such as line operational flight training (LOFT) and line operational evaluation (LOE). He is also preparing the Volpe research aircraft for upcoming WAAS operational readiness tests. Mr. Kendra is currently attending a computer science curriculum at Harvard University.
