2004 End of the Year Report's Highlights

In our first year of existence we are proud to report the following highlights, from USAID's Middle East Public Diplomacy:

  • Our Office was cited in the September 2004 report of the United States Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy which recommended that other areas of the globe follow USAID's practice of creating a director of public diplomacy.
  • Our Office Director, Mr. Walid Maalouf was interviewed in the Arab print media on the President's Middle East Partnership Initiative and the Broader Middle East & North Africa's Initiative. About 40 Middle Eastern Community newspapers and magazines covered our activities and re-published stories from Front Lines.
  • Mr. Maalouf participated in Muslim World Outreach interagency meetings.
  • We submitted an executive plan on Public Diplomacy in the greater Middle East to the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy, the NSC and the Advisory Commission.
  • We reached out to the Middle Eastern American Community through keynote speeches, seminars, panel discussions, one-on-one meetings with leaders of the community in Boston, Orlando, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago and distributed 1200 Public Diplomacy information folders.
  • We received official delegates from embassies & missions and the community. Maintained an information stream with national and international leaders from embassies, UN missions, media, academics, NGO, and community leaders on a monthly basis through mailings of Front Lines, press releases, marketing materials and folders. Met with the Greater Middle Eastern & North African Ambassadors.
  • We organized two summits: the Middle Eastern Media summit and the Middle Eastern NGO summit at State Department and USAID headquarters. Keynote speakers: Under Secretary of State Paula Dobriansky; USAID Administrator Andrew Natsios; Special Assistant to the President Ambassador Elliott Abrams; Assistant Secretary Pat Harrison; Assistant Secretary Richard Boucher; Assistant Administrator Ed Fox and other distinguished representative of the Administration. More than 40 publications and 30 heads of NGO's participated.
  • We developed a web page to keep you and the Middle Eastern community informed of our activities on Public Diplomacy.

With this end of the year update, we would also like to thank those who have helped us grow and increased our visibility within the government agencies and Middle Eastern American Communities.
