Living History Programs:  Living History programs are a favorite for many visitors.  In 2009, the programs will be offered every day during the summer beginning May 17 and lasting through September 7.  At Appomattox Court House NHP, the premise of the program is centered around actors who portray people that were actually in Appomattox Court House in 1865.  You will likely meet a man who lives nearby but served in Lee's army and was paroled "this April past."  You'll also meet a Federal soldier from the 188th Pennsylvania Infantry who has been assigned to Appomattox as a provost guard (military police).  There will be at least one presenter Monday -Thursday, and they'll both be there Friday - Sunday.  They give formal programs that begin in the visitor center at :20 past the hour, but they stay in character all day.  Just remember, when you speak to them, it's the same date for them as it is for you, but the year is 1865!

Special Programs:  Check the Schedule of Events calendar for special programs that may be offered, especially during the anniversary week in April and periodically throughout the summer.

Exhibits:  Exhibits include many original artifacts associated with the events surrounding the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Artifacts range from the pencil used by General Lee to make corrections in the surrender terms to uniforms, documents and military artifacts associated with the historic events at Appomattox Court House.

Theater:  The Park has a 70 seat theatre where two different 15 minute slide programs are shown on an hourly schedule. The "Documentary" program covering the campaign is always shown on the 1/2 hour. The second program, "Soldiers Diaries" consists of excerpts from diaries of soldiers who were present at the site in 1865, and is always shown on the hour. The last show of the day is the "Documentary" at 4:30 pm.

Did You Know?
General R. E. Lee's father, "Light Horse Harry" Lee, was present at the surrender of General Cornwallis - at Yorktown. Henry Lee wrote that Cornwallis had shirked his responsibility by sending junior officers to meet with General Washington. Robert met personally with General Grant at Appomattox.
