On this page, teachers can: 1. Learn about an orientation DVD available to them, 2. Obtain a copy of the park's teacher packet, and 3. Gain access to Lesson Plans, 4. Learn how to schedule a field trip to the park, including how to request a fee waiver.
1. Teachers may request to borrow a copy of the park's two orientation videos, "Honor Answers Honor" and "The Appomattox Campaign" available on DVD. Each program is about 15 minutes in length. Contact the education coordinator, Ranger Bert Dunkerly, to make the request.
2. The park's teacher packet is intended to provide background information about how the armies came to meet at Appomattox Court House, and what brought about the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. There are also copies of historic documents, study questions, and learning activities for young learners. This is a .pdf file that is intended for educational purposes and may be copied in part, or in total.
3. Lesson Plans meeting National and Virginia Standards of Learning are available to teachers and home schoolers at no charge through the Curriculum Materials link.
4. Field trips should be scheduled with the educational resources contact, Ranger Bert Dunkerly. Please refer to the "Appomattox Group Reservation Form" to see if your group qualifies for a fee waiver.
Important Notes:
- Print out these take along directions to ensure a timely arrival.
- The park is an outdoor site, much of your visit will be either outside or in unheated buildings. Please have students dress appropriately. If it looks like rain on your scheduled date, please call the park to discuss rescheduling.
- The park does have a bookstore and gift shop. Many small items like postcards, flags, reproduction money, etc. are available. Please let us know if your group plans to shop, and allow extra time for it during your visit.
- The park does not have a picnic area. Groups may eat their lunches in the parking lot (there is a large open grassy area here). Please ensure all trash is picked up.
