The goal of this project was to evaluate the cost and performance of the SI/E technology for remediation of DNAPL source zones. SI/E was demonstrated at Launch Complex 34, where the chlorinated volatile organic compound (CVOC) trichloroethylene (TCE) is present in the aquifer as a DNAPL. Smaller amounts of dissolved cis1,2-dichloroethylene (DCE) and vinyl chloride also are present in the groundwater as a result of the natural degradation of TCE. Field application of the technology started in July 2001 and ended in December 2001. Performance assessment activities were conducted before, during, and after the demonstration.
