ERG 2008 Mobile for Windows - README Version 1.2 Contents ======== * System Requirements * Installation * Upgrades * Uninstalling * User Registration * Known Issues * Release History * ERG 2008 Mobile Overview * Disclaimer System Requirements =================== A personal computer with Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista. Only 7 MB of hard disk space is required, but much more will be required if the Microsoft .NET Framework must be installed (see below). ERG Mobile is dependent on the Microsoft .NET Framework v3.5 Service Pack 1. The ERG Mobile setup program will install this system dependency automatically if it detects it does not already exist on your computer. Its installation requires administrative privileges and as much as 500 MB of hard disk space. Installation ============ To install ERG 2008 Mobile for Windows, simply execute the setup program, ERG_Windows_Setup.exe, and follow the instructions. If the Microsoft .NET Framework dependency indicated above is not detected on the target computer, it will be automatically installed. If the ERG Mobile setup was downloaded (as opposed to a CD distribution), then it will first automatically download the .NET Framework if necessary. If the .NET Framework dependency gets installed, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you verify you have the latest updates for it by running Windows Update (http://update.microsoft.com). In particular, service pack and security updates may be available. NOTE WELL: If the Microsoft .NET Framework needs to be downloaded, be aware that it is large, and thus the download and installation may take some time. If desired, the Microsoft .NET Framework V3.5 SP1 can be manually downloaded and installed from the following site before attempting to install ERG Mobile: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ab99342f-5d1a-413d-8319-81da479ab0d7&DisplayLang=en Upgrades ======== If a previous version of ERG 2008 Mobile already exists on your PC, it will be automatically upgraded during the installation of the new version. However, note that the 2004 and 2008 versions of ERG Mobile are separate applications; if ERG 2004 Mobile is already installed, it will remain installed even after installing ERG 2008 Mobile. To uninstall ERG 2004 Mobile, see the Uninstalling section below. Uninstalling ============ Uninstall ERG Mobile using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel. Known Issues ============ ERG Mobile will not display properly unless the normal (default) setting is used for the DPI scaling (font size) option. If the right and bottom edges of windows are being cut off, then verify this setting as follows: Windows XP 1) In an open area of your Windows desktop, right-click and select Properties from the resulting pop-up menu. 2) Select the Settings tab. 3) Press the Advanced button. 4) You should see a "DPI setting" drop-down list. The "Normal size" option must be selected for ERG Mobile to display properly. Windows Vista 1) In an open area of your Windows desktop, right-click and select Personalize from the resulting pop-up menu. 2) In the Tasks on the left, select "Adjust font size (DPI)" (note that administrative privileges are required). 3) In the resulting DPI Scaling dialog, the "Default scale" option must be selected for ERG Mobile to display properly. It is primarily a guide to aid first responders in (1) quickly identifying the specific or generic classification of the material(s) involved in the incident, and (2) protecting themselves and the general public during this initial response phase of the incident. ERG 2008 Mobile is a software version of the 2008 edition of the ERG. Distributed by the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT), its development was provided by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). For downloads and additional information, see http://phmsa.dot.gov/hazmat/library/erg. For comprehensive hazardous substance data and identification support, including integration of the ERG 2008, see NLM's Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER): http://wiser.nlm.nih.gov/.
