In 1966, VISTA volunteers began organizing and staffing summer camps across the country for low-income youth. Activities included horseback riding, swimming, scavenger hunts, candle making, sleepouts, cookouts, and nature study. "We gave the campers a chance to be kids for five days, to discover the country, to be away from the pressures of cars and police and going to the store for mother," said Chuck Koloms, a VISTA volunteer who, in 1968, sold candy in Pittsburgh's City Hall to raise funds to help turn a local estate into Maple Lodge Camp.
