In the late 1960s, VISTA created a Professional Corps to enlist lawyers, doctors, and architects. VISTA volunteers (mostly lawyers and paralegals) were active in legal assistance programs throughout the country. Among the programs were: juvenile justice and civil rights of prisoners; legal services for the elderly poor, mentally handicapped, and Native American groups; community legal education; assistance to cooperatives and credit union; and research regarding utilities, welfare rights, housing and consumer legislation, and land use. |
