Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Database

The Environmental Impact Statement Database provides useful information about EISs filed with EPA.

Notice of Availability

All EISs prepared by federal agencies are filed with EPA. Each week, EPA publishes in the Federal Register a "Notice of Availability" for all of the EISs filed with EPA during the previous week. EPA publishes this notice each Friday; if a holiday falls on Friday, the notice is published on Thursday.

The EPA "Notice of Availability" is the official start of the public comment period required under the Council on Environmental Quality's regulations implementing the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). It is also the start of the 30-day "wait period" for Final EISs in which an agency waits 30 days before making a decision on a proposed action.

EPA Comments on EISs

To find information about previous EPA comments, select either All EISs or Search for specific EISs.

EPA reviews EISs prepared by other federal agencies and makes those reviews public by publishing summaries of those comments, generally every Friday, in the Federal Register.

EPA has also developed a set of criteria for rating draft EISs. The rating system provides a basis upon which EPA makes recommendations to the lead agency for improving the draft EIS.
