SILSBEE MAN SENTENCED FOR FEDERAL DRUG AND GUN CHARGES

Project Safe Neighborhoods Nets Man 12 Years in Federal Pen


          BEAUMONT, TX – United States Attorney Matthew D. Orwig announced that a 20-year-old Silsbee, Texas, man was sentenced today to more than 12 years in prison for federal drug and gun charges in the Eastern District of Texas.

          United States District Judge Thad Heartfield sentenced JABARIAN GACOBE ELAM to five years and 10 months in federal prison for possession with the intent to distribute a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a playground at the Autumn Trace Apartments in Silsbee, and seven years in federal prison for brandishing a firearm in furtherance of that drug trafficking offense.

          These sentences were ordered to run consecutive with each other for a total imprisonment of 154 months.

          According to information presented in court, this defendant possessed with intent to distribute five grams or more of crack cocaine within 1,000 feet of the playground at the Autumn Trace Apartments in Silsbee on July 10, 2006. While possessing crack cocaine, the defendant also possessed and brandished a firearm.

          This case was investigated by the Silsbee Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle S. Englade prosecuted the case.
