NHGRI White Papers for the Planning Process

NHGRI has frequently used a "white paper" process to solicit ideas. This process was used, for example, to obtain suggestions about model organism sequencing targets, and was very successful not only in identifying many important organisms for genomic sequencing, but also in bringing together researchers working with particular model organisms. The white paper process also helps NHGRI address the competition among good ideas for finite resources.

NHGRI Wants Your Ideas

For the 2009-2010 planning process, NHGRI has decided to use a white paper process as one approach for obtaining new ideas and generating community interest. On the basis of discussions among NHGRI staff and a number of the Institute's advisors, we have identified four initial topic areas and have generated initial white paper drafts for each. Follow the links below to read and comment on the current white papers.

Revised White Papers

The white papers below have been revised based on comments received through February 27, 2009. Now, we'd like for you to help answer, or suggest methods to find answers to the questions posed in the white papers. Input received through this white paper comment process will feed into further planning activities and workshops, which will be held in 2009 and 2010. The comment period for these revised white papers will be open through June 30, 2009.
