Dr. Thomas B. Sheridan, National Expert
Human-Automation Interaction and Modeling

Thomas B. Sheridan is Senior Transportation Fellow at Volpe and has headed or supports projects in aviation (human-automation interaction, performance metrics), highway (driver distraction) and rail safety. He received the MSc from University of California, the  ScD degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Dr. (honorary) from Delft University of Technology, Netherlands. He is also Ford Professor of Engineering and Applied Psychology Emeritus in both the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT.

Dr. Sheridan served as president of both the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and the IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society, and was Editor of IEEE Transactions on Man-Machine Systems.  He.has chaired the ITS America Human Factors Committee,  the National Research Council Human Factors Commitee, and has served on a number of other government, NRC and industrial advisory committees.  He is a private pilot. He has authored over 200 technical papers and five books,

Dr. Sheridan an IEEE fellow and received their Norbert Wiener and Joseph Wohl awards, as well as the IEEE Centennial Medal and Third Millenium Medal. He is also a fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and is recipient of their Paul Fitts Education Award and President's Distinguished Service Award. He is a fellow of the International Ergonomics Association.  He received the National Engineering Award of the American Association of Engineering Societies and the Oldenburger Medal of ASME. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1995.
