Extension/4-H Support
for Military Youth and Family Programs
CSREES has developed partnerships with both
the Army and Air Force to support youth and
family programs on installations around the
world. With the support of 4-H extension
professionals, military staff provide strong
educational programs so that military men
and women can pursue their critical, high
risk assignments knowing that their children
are in safe and nurturing environments.
The State 4-H Military Liaison is a 4-H
Youth Development professional designated
by the State 4-H Leader to serve as liaison
between Army and Air Force Installations,
National Guard and Reserve Units, county
4-H staff, and CSREES. Liaisons coordinate
4-H support to all military youth in the
state and work with county staff to connect
military children to 4-H clubs in their communities
as well as those offered on installations. Locate
your state 4-H Military Liaison.
4-H clubs provide quality educational experiences
to military youth using research based curricula
in photography, arts, computer technology
and citizenship for military youth ages 5-19.
4-H clubs have been established on nearly
every Army and Air Force installation world
wide, while 4-H clubs in communities have
opened their doors to military youth living
off post as well as youth of National Guard
and Reserve families. As a parent's military
role causes frequent family moves, 4-H clubs
provide predictability and stability throughout
the military child's life.
Extension provides resources and programs
in a wide variety of subject areas that can
benefit military staff as they serve their
youth and families. CYFERnet reviews
and posts appropriate resources and materials
and offers web-based trainings on topics
relevant to professionals working with military
children and youth.
