Multicultural OutreachMotor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for African-Americans and Hispanics. They are the leading cause of death for African-Americans through the age of 14 and the second leading cause of death between the ages of 15 and 24, surpassed only by homicides. For Hispanics, they are the leading cause of death for ages 1 through 44. A recent study examined motor vehicle fatality exposure rates and found that, although African-American and Hispanic male teens travel fewer vehicle miles than their white counterparts, they are nearly twice as likely to die in a motor vehicle crash. To address these traffic safety issues, each of the states in Region V has developed programs and resources, and participates in activities that help reach the diverse populations in their states.
