ATF Director to Present Historic Permit for George Washington's Distillery
Washington - On May 21st, Bradley A. Buckles, Director
of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) will present a Federal
permit that authorizes the operation of a distilled spirits plant at George
Washington's historic site at Mount Vernon.
Director Buckles will present the permit at the official groundbreaking
ceremony featuring the restoration of George Washington's distillery at
its recently discovered archaeological site.
The permit number DSP - VA- 1797 has historical significance. It is based
on the year that George Washington constructed his distillery at Mount
Vernon.
Mount Vernon is best known as the home of America's first President,
but it was also the site where George Washington operated an early colonial
still. Historic Mount Vernon, in cooperation with the Distilled Spirits
Council of the United States, has embarked on a project to reconstruct
a still house on the same site where the first President produced whiskey.
