Welcome to the Alabama Emergency Management Agency

We are excited you are taking the time to learn about your disaster risks and are preparing your response effort. It is the mission of the AEMA to assist the needs of disaster victims as well as assisting local government in preparedness, response and recovery. On a daily basis we are coordinating with federal and state agencies to facilitate our disaster preparedness. Recent disasters have taught us the importance of residents knowing the threats they face and also having a plan to sustain themselves for a minimum of 72 hours. This website will help you determine what you need in preparation for the next disaster.

For every facet of your daily life you need to know what you are going to do when an emergency occurs, either at home or while at work. It is important for residents in Alabama and business owners to understand the information they will need to have readily available during and following an emergency. Be Informed

In order to prepare for potential disasters in your area you must be informed of the hazards you face in your community. You can obtain this information from your local emergency management agency office. The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration weather radio is a nationwide network of radio stations broadcasting weather information from your nearby weather service. It is recommended you purchase a weather radio for your home and make sure it is programmed for your particular area. Knowing your evacuation route in the event of severe weather, chemical incident or a radiological incident is another way to be informed.

Get Involved

It is important for all Alabama residents to realize they play a crucial role in making sure there families are
prepared for the next disaster. There are a number of ways available for citizens to get involved prior to a disaster, one such program is theCommunity Emergency Response Team (CERT). Training forCERT consists of 20 hours of instruction on topics that include disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster psychology.

Citizen Corps is another method to get involved, it provides opportunities for people across the country to
participate in a range of measures to make their families, their homes, and their communities safer from the

Disaster Recovery

Recovering from a disaster can be a long process, but the thing you need to ensure is the safety of you and your family. If you are clearing debris wear sturdy boots and gloves. Watch for washed out roads, contaminated buildings, gas leaks, broken gas lines and damaged electrical wiring. It is important to have a battery powered radio with you so can listen for emergency updates and news reports. If possible take pictures of your damage for insurance purposes and track your cleaning cost. If the disaster qualifies as a federal disaster you maybe eligible for federal assistance, for more information on federal assistance go to fema.gov.
