Seven actual or potential conflict situations around the world deteriorated and one improved in April 2009, according to CrisisWatch. Heavy fighting between government forces and the LTTE continued in Sri Lanka’s north east, with disastrous consequences for the trapped civilian population. In Kenya divisions within the fragile coalition government rose to new levels, while demonstrations in Thailand in favour of ousted PM Thaksin turned violent and left two dead. The relationship between Turkey and Armenia improved after an agreement on a “roadmap” to normalisation of relations and opening of their joint border.
