Greening EPA's Fleet
In This Section
EPA is living its mission of protecting human health and the
environment while also meeting legislative requirements by increasing
its use of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), which reduce harmful
emissions and increase fuel efficiency. AFVs, such as those powered by
compressed natural gas (CNG), ethanol, and/or electricity, are more
fuel-efficient and emit less carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and other
air pollutants than traditional vehicles. Already, more than 453 of the
1,124 vehicles in the Agency's national fleet are AFVs or other advanced
technology vehicles.
Looking to the future, the Agency plans on acquiring plug-in hybrid
vehicles as they become commercially available. These types of vehicles
are encouraged by Executive Order 13423. EPA is committed to acquiring
AFVs, reducing its use of petroleum fuel, increasing alternative fuel
consumption, and encouraging private sector organizations to follow its
lead.
