Major Initiative Status Report

Ongoing IVBSS activities:

  • The IVBSS program has awarded a $25 million contract to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI). Partnering with UMTRI are Visteon, Eaton, Cognex, Honda R&D Americas, Battelle and the Michigan Department of Transportation. The consortium will develop and test a new, integrated crash warning system in a fleet of 16 passenger cars and 10 heavy-duty trucks. UMTRI will serve as the primary contractor, coordinating the work of the partnership and conducting the field experiments. The partners will contribute an additional $6.6 million.

  • An IVBSS Team has been formed, consisting of representatives from NHTSA, FHWA ITS Joint Program Office, FTA, FMCSA, NIST, and the Volpe Center. A Program Plan was completed and approved by U.S. DOT management.

  • On September 21, 2004, a Public Meeting and Workshop was held in Novi, MI to present the Program Plan and to obtain input from stakeholders (link to Stakeholder Involvement page).

  • Stakeholder input was gathered and used to fine-tune the Program Plan; changes to the Plan were presented to U.S. DOT management and approved.
