Federal Employees Health Benefits Insurance Program (FEHB)
Through the Federal Employees Health Benefits Insurance Program (FEHB) employees can choose from a wide range of health insurance plans.
There are two types of enrollment: Self-Only and Self and Family. A Self and Family enrollment covers an employee, his/her spouse and their unmarried dependent children under the age of 22. Also, unmarried disabled children over the age of 22 who are incapable of self support because of a physical or mental disability that began before age 22 may be included in employee coverage.
Premiums
Each health plan carrier under the FEHB Program charges a different premium. The government pays up to 75% of the cost of employee health benefits coverage, and the employee pays the remainder, based on a formula set by law.
Open Season
Each year, an Open Season is held for FEHB Program enrollees to change health plans or the type of enrollment. Open Season typically runs from the Monday of the second full workweek in November through the Monday of the second full workweek in December.
