The Asian/Pacific Islander population faces a number of difficulties when it comes to improving traffic safety. Often, there are both cultural and lingual barriers that may impede traffic safety messages. Together with the fact that there has been very little research, this lack of effective outreach to the communities has only let the traffic safety conditions get worse. Moreover, the Asian/Pacific Islander group continues to battle certain traffic safety problems. In fact, motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death for Asian/Pacific Islanders ages 1-24.

In order to save the lives of the parents and children that are dying in car crashes, and to promote healthy families and communities, NHTSA has created programs, formed relationships, and campaigns that target the traffic safety of Asian/Pacific Islander communities.

The Asian/Pacific Islander Outreach web site is designed to give you direct access to NHTSA's traffic safety activities, contacts, events, materials, and ideas that are tailored specifically to the Asian/Pacific Islander population in the United States in the hopes that you can make some changes in your community to save lives.
