Nearly 15,000 transportation security officers (TSOs) from 372 airports recently qualified for Phase II E-Band promotions - moving up from the D-Band - as part of TSA's Career Progression Program. Promotions were effective February 18.

These promotions follow the September 2006 Phase I promotions that moved more than 5,500 TSOs to the E-Band level.

Going forward, E-Band promotions will happen on an on-going basis as D-Band TSOs reach their two-year anniversary with TSA and meet necessary performance criteria. Career Progression offers experienced TSOs additional opportunities for career growth. The program also addresses the need to reward proficiency, improve retention and increase job satisfaction.

Experienced TSOs are offered the opportunity to advance by following a more technical career path to become master or expert TSOs in addition to the already existing management career tracks of lead and supervisory TSOs. Employees who specialize and certify in technical programs, including behavior detection officers and bomb appraisal officers may qualify as master TSOs, eligible for the F-Band, or as expert TSOs eligible for the G-Band.

Promoted TSOs receive the minimum E-Band salary of $27,100 a year (plus locality pay) or a $500 pay increase, whichever is greater. The top of the E-Band is $40,700. By comparison, the D-Band pay range is $23,600-$35,400.
