A key component of TSA's successful reduction in days out from work (due to injury) - a dramatic 55 percent in fiscal year 2006 - was the quarterly scorecard initiative begun earlier by the agency's Office of Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE).

OSHE developed the scorecard initiative in response to the Office of Management and Budget's call for establishing quarterly performance goals and providing updates on meeting those goals beginning March 30, 2006. OSHE identified 58 large airports that accounted for 80 percent of all injury claims filed by TSA employees. OSHE sends quarterly scorecards to the airports with airport-specific performance goals. During fiscal 2006, which ended September 30, the airports identified and abated workplace hazards and ensured timely and thorough investigations of all workplace injuries. Airports often teamed with each other to develop excellent tools and processes

OSHE requested that each airport demonstrate with metrics a quality assurance process to ensure that injury claims conform to Office of Workers' Compensation Programs guidelines. The airports focused on both unsafe work practices and unsafe workplace conditions.

Specific corrective actions taken at the airports included:

"As we continue to focus on safety and health, we will see fewer injuries and illnesses this year and beyond, ensuring that we can continue to provide quality customer service and vigilant transportation security while protecting the workforce." said Susan Tracey, chief administrative officer and TSA's designated agency safety and health office
