Why was the VII program renamed and branded?

The name Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) is meaningful within a relatively small community currently involved in research and development. As VII concepts move from research into implementation, we need a way of speaking about the program that resonates with a broader group of potential partners and consumers.

What does IntelliDriveSM stand for?

IntelliDriveSM refers to a set of technologies and wireless networking capabilities that have the potential to help drivers avoid crashes by increasing their situational awareness of hazards and events on the roadway and enabling active safety applications on vehicles. The wireless networking capabilities at the heart of IntelliDriveSM also support numerous mobility, environmental, and convenience applications.

How does IntelliDriveSM differ from VII?

IntelliDriveSM is envisioned to encompass a broader suite of potential technologies and capabilities than the original notion of VII. Technical requirements will be established through an open platform architecture, allowing auto-manufacturers and technology companies to develop innovative on-board safety devices using multiple existing and emerging technologies.

How is IntelliDriveSM “Safer, Smarter, and Greener”?

IntelliDriveSM enables lifesaving applications that help drivers avoid crashes, and intelligence to help travelers make smarter choices – potentially reducing their carbon footprints and reaching their destinations more smoothly.

How were the new name and brand developed?

A professional marketing firm developed both based on a process that involved input from stakeholders and from an independent consumer focus group.

Is IntelliDriveSM trademarked?

The US Department of Transportation (USDOT) has a service mark for words, letters and design related to IntelliDriveSM .

Who can use the new name and brand and in what capacity?

No one can use the term or design without permission from the U.S. DOT. IntelliDriveSM should not be used to describe products intended to be compliant with a certain set of standards, as no such standards have been developed at this time. USDOT is not making the term or design available until requirements for use have been established. Requests for use should be addressed to Bob Kern at robert.kern@dot.gov.

How will the VII research partnership be affected?

USDOT plans to continue working with the automobile industry, public agencies, and other key partners to advance related research.
