The Russia-Georgia conflict has had a dramatic impact on the region, and raised new concerns about Russia’s role in the World. Russia’s recognition of the Georgian separatist territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia has also reopened a debate between Russia and the West over the meaning of sovereignty and independence. Some analysts have argued that Russia’s main goal is to have a more assertive policy in its neighborhood and to limit further NATO expansion. Some observers believe that a new Cold War is underway. What are the long term consequences and wider implications for peace and stability in the Caucasus? How will Russia’s relations with its neighbors evolve? What impact will the conflict have on Russia’s relations with the United States, the European Union, and NATO?
