What is Citizen Corps?Citizen Corps is the grass-roots movement that actively involves everyone in making communities across America safer, stronger, and better prepared. We all have a role to play in keeping our hometowns safe and secure and Citizen Corps helps you to prepare, train, and volunteer. Citizen Corps also helps promote Ready, a public service campaign that urges people to take some basic steps to prepare for potential terrorist attacks and other emergencies: get an emergency supply kit, make a family communication plan, and be informed. Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001 and the recurring reminders of the powerful forces of nature, we've become more aware of our vulnerabilities, appreciative of our freedoms, and understanding that we have a personal responsibility for the safety of our families, our neighbors and our nation. |

Citizen Corps is a component of the USA Freedom Corps which was established after 9/11 by President Bush and is coordinated nationally by the Department of Homeland Security. It was created to help synchronize volunteer activities that will make our communities safer, stronger, and better prepared to respond to any emergency situation. Its mission is to harness the power of every individual through education, training, and volunteer service. This mission is accomplished through a national network of state, local, and tribal Citizen Corps Councils. These Councils build on community strengths to implement Citizen Corps programs and carry out a local strategy to have every American participate. There are presenty 2,230 Councils which serve 215,682,053 people or 74% of the total U.S. population. |
