Transportation and Climate Change Clearinghouse
The Transportation and Climate Change Clearinghouse is designed as a one-stop source of information on transportation and climate change issues. It includes information on greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, analytic methods and tools, GHG reduction strategies, potential impacts of climate change on transportation infrastructure, and approaches for integrating climate change considerations into transportation decision making.
Hot Topics:
- Carbon Sequestration Pilot Program: Implementation and Next Steps (2009). In July 2008, the FHWA's Office of Natural and Human Environment selected the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) to participate in a carbon sequestration pilot program (CSPP).
- Growing Cooler: The Evidence on Urban Development and Climate Change (2008). This report illustrates how compact development can be a crucial strategy in combating greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles. It makes the case that one of the best ways to get people to drive less is to build pedestrian-friendly places with a mix of uses, where people can walk, bike, or take transit from their homes to offices, schools, restaurants, and shopping. The report recommends policy and program changes that can be implemented at the local, regional, state, and federal levels to make green, compact neighborhoods more available and more affordable.
- The Potential Impacts of Global Sea Level Rise on Transportation Infrastructure Phase 1 - Final Report: the District of Columbia, Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia. This study uses multiple data sources to quantify the potential impact of sea level rise on land and transportation infrastructure in coastal areas of the eastern United States.
