High school senior Nick Hock started volunteering early in life. As a four-year-old, he accompanied his parents when they volunteered at the Bowleys Quarters Improvement Association in their Maryland hometown. So he was an eager participant when a middle school science teacher started a service-learning project, growing bay grass in the classroom for spring-time transplantation to the Chesapeake Bay. The grasses, which are often destroyed by boats entering shallow areas, are vital to the bay’s ecosystem, filtering water and providing places for fish to hide from predators and to spawn. Although he grew up on the bay, Hock says he never knew how important the bay was until he took that science class. Since then, he’s continued with numerous activities focused on the bay as part of Chesapeake Bay Memories, an organization that offers field trips to the bay for under-privileged children. But that’s only part of Hock’s activities. He also serves as a DJ at Eastern High School in Essex, Md., and has provided computer support to both teachers and fellow students there. Hock, who plans to be an electrician, was honored as one of the top four Craftsmen of the Year in Maryland and recently became an Eagle Scout. He plans to study business management in college in preparation for a career in construction. He also intends to continue volunteering, both on and off the Chesapeake Bay. |
