Issues of Focus

Senior Corps programs fund a broad range of volunteer activities that help meet community needs. In addition, Senior Corps supports a number of strategic initiatives:

Prisoner re-entry: Senior Corps supports President Bush’s prisoner re-entry initiative aimed at preventing inmates from returning to prison. We assist organizations dedicated to providing ex-inmates with life skills, employment guidance, and general mentoring.

Children of incarcerated parents: Senior Corps continues to develop relationships with local organizations where volunteers serve as mentors, tutors, court-appointed special advocates, and providers of day care to children whose parents are in prison.

Digital divide: Senior Corps works closely with organizations that help children and families in low-income communities develop the skills needed to keep up in the digital age.

Literacy and tutoring: Senior Corps supports organizations that employ tutors in a variety of settings and through a broad range of activities that contribute directly to students’ academic success.

Homeland security: Senior Corps assists organizations dedicated to responding to natural disasters, working in public health, and helping ensure public safety.

Independent living for seniors: In response to the long-term challenge of people living longer lives, Senior Corps provides funding to organizations that answer the demand for increased independent living services and respite care.
