Megan, age 13, and mother Julie, age 49

Intergenerational Description of Joint Project:

Julie is staff photographer for the Wildlife Conservation Society. It is her job to photograph conservation efforts in places like Zambia, Africa. She hopes the images she takes and shares will inspire care for wildlife and wild lands. Julie’s daughter, Megan, went with her mother on assignment to Zambia to learn about the role future generations have to help save our planet.

Celebration of Rachel Carson’s Sense of Wonder:

Zambia is a country rich with natural resources but expanding human needs have placed pressure on the country’s biodiversity including hippos. Hippos rely on fresh water habitats putting them at odds with people and agriculture. Waterholes are shrinking for Africa's largest remaining hippo population. Julie and Megan spent hours watching, listening to, and photographing the hippos and the people who live near them. They hope to educate and inspire everyone to save what they see in the pictures they made.
