Murray, Utah
Murray (population 34,024) was first settled in the mid-19th century and grew with the discovery of precious metals in the surrounding canyons, leading to the establishment of smelters and other industries.
Incorporated in 1902, the city recently celebrated its centennial with a variety of heritage initiatives. Two books on Murray history were published, students in each school created short videos about local history, and a new city museum was created in City Hall.
The museum exhibit, "Land, Lead, and Leadership: The Emergence of Murray City," focuses on the impact of the ore smelter industry on the community.
The City has published a book describing over 400 historic buildings in the community and a walking tour of the historic business district has been developed. The Murray Historic Preservation Advisory Board leads preservation activities in the community and is preparing the community's first historic district nomination.
Each May, Murray Vintage Days celebrates the history of Murray with activities such as historic downtown or neighborhood walking tours, bus tours, cemetery tours, an historic photo competition, and a preservation awards ceremony.
