Careers

The U.S. transportation system continues to be the largest in the world—a combination of vast and complex networks of highways, airways, railways, rivers, and pipelines. Keeping this system operational requires the skills and talents of a transportation workforce that is as diverse and complex as the transportation system they service.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration plays a key role in accomplishing the mission of the DOT. PHMSA coordinates the safe and secure movement of almost 1 million daily shipments of hazardous materials by all different modes of transportation. Here at PHMSA, we ensure the safe transportation and shipping of hazardous materials as well as overseeing and regulating millions of miles of the nation’s pipelines.

In order to ensure the safe transportation of hazardous materials and careful regulation of pipelines, PHMSA must promote a diverse, thriving working environment. We support this mission through various efforts and outreach aimed at attracting the most qualified, talented individuals for each program area. A diverse environment helps us to better understand the needs of the people we serve and utilize the strengths of each employee in order to meet the transportation challenges of today and tomorrow.

We offer a broad spectrum of careers ranging in the areas of engineering, business, legal, science, administrative and other professional opportunities.
