Coping with Crisis

U. S. Homeland Security

The purpose of the DoDEA Crisis Management Web site is to help families, educators, and community members understand how schools will ensure that children and personnel are safe and secure in the event of a crisis. The Web site provides current information for families and educators about schools' crisis management policies and procedures, and makes available useful resources to help children and adults cope with the stress and anxiety associated with traumatic incidents.

It is important that teachers and families know how to support young people during and following traumatic situations, to help them develop coping skills to deal with their feelings and concerns, and to spot those who have acute and long-term reactions to crisis. The Web site offers a menu of information, strategies, and resources that can aid school personnel and families in the event of traumatic events such as assaults, natural disasters, and war. Since these crises have the potential to affect the entire school community, links with local resources as well as many professional agencies with expertise in helping children and adults deal with crisis can be found on this site.
